UT PGE remains the No. 1 graduate program in petroleum engineering.
This top rating, according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings, affirms UT PGE’s position as the nation’s leading petroleum engineering department.
U.S. News' graduate rankings, separate from the magazine's yearly ranking of undergraduate programs, are among the most prestigious ratings in higher education. The last ranking of petroleum engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report was in 2009.
Almost 200 students are currently enrolled in UT PGE’s M.S. and Ph.D. graduate degree programs. Students are instructed by world-class faculty, including three members of the National Academy of Engineering.

With $17.1 million in research funding and a low student-to-faculty ratio, UT PGE provides students with opportunities to participate in high-caliber energy research. Ground-breaking innovations coming out of the department include technology-driven solutions for enhanced oil recovery, on-shore and off-shore drilling, sustainable and efficient methods for hydraulic fracturing, and geologic carbon storage.
UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering remains in the top 10 engineering schools. The Cockrell School’s aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering programs are all ranked in the nation’s top 10 as well.
Engineering specialty rankings are based on peer assessments by department heads in each specialty area. The peer assessment surveys for the specialty area rankings were conducted in fall 2015.
