The Hildebrand Department is the No. 1 undergraduate program in petroleum engineering, according to the 2019 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Texas A&M University ranks No. 2 and Pennsylvania State University ranks No. 3. In the 2019 graduate rankings, released last spring, the Hildebrand Department's graduate program also ranked No. 1, affirming UT PGE’s position as the nation’s leading petroleum engineering department.

For the fall of 2018, almost 400 students are enrolled in the undergraduate petroleum engineering program at UT Austin. Students are instructed by world-class faculty, including four members of the National Academy of Engineering.

With a low student-to-faculty ratio, UT PGE provides students with opportunities to learn from the latest technology in the classroom and participate in high-caliber undergraduate energy research to best prepare them for careers in industry. In addition, undergraduate students meet with oil and gas leaders through student organizations, learn about energy, engineering and the environment via our study abroad program and garner field experience through petroleum engineering camps and internships.

With a $25 million gift provided by UT PGE alumnus Jeff Hildebrand last fall, the department is launching new student programming that will better connect students to alumni and engage students in curriculum best practices.

UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering jumps two spots into No. 9 for engineering schools. The Cockrell School’s chemical, civil and environmental engineering programs are all ranked in the nation’s top 5. U.S. News' undergraduate rankings, which are among the most prestigious ratings in higher education.

The undergraduate engineering programs rankings were based solely on peer assessment surveys. To appear on an undergraduate engineering survey, a school must have an undergraduate engineering program accredited by ABET.
