The UT PetroBowl team — Ram Disabar, Dany Hachem, Blazej Ksiazek, Misael Morales and Divya Shah — placed second in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) North America Regional Qualifiers in March.

At the regional competition, UT’s team defeated the University of Houston, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Penn State University, and defending world champion University of Oklahoma before losing a very close match to Colorado School of Mines. With their second-place finish, they advance to the 32-team international tournament, which will be held in October at SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Houston.

“PetroBowl is a great opportunity to test your knowledge of petroleum engineering trivia against your peers in a competitive but friendly environment,” says Ksiazek. “It’s so nice to be competing again after the COVID pandemic, and I’m looking forward to building an even stronger UT team over the next year.”

The PetroBowl competition pitches SPE student chapter teams against each other in a series of quick-fire rounds, answering technical and nontechnical industry-related questions. The contest has grown in size and popularity since its debut in 2002, and in 2015 was taken global with the introduction of six regional qualifier contests.
